RIVER Improvements

Identifying and Supporting the Most Effective Flood Mitigation Projects

An engineering analysis is currently underway to identify potential floodplain restoration and other flood mitigation projects in the Barre-Montpelier area of the Winooski watershed.

This assessment is called RIVER (Resilience Initiative for Vermont Empowerment and Recovery). It is being managed by Vermont Emergency Management and has been funded by FEMA.

The assessment is expected to yield a list of recommended projects by this Fall.

MCRR, along with the Central Vermont Regional Planning Commission and other partners, will:

  1. help to identify the projects, from among those recommended, that promise to yield the most benefit.

  2. work to build community understanding of and support for these projects.

  3. support efforts to secure the funding necessary to complete these projects.
