Develop a River Edge Master Plan for Montpelier

To become more flood resilient, Montpelier must reassess its river corridors, and take measures where possible to redesign those areas to better contain, absorb, dissipate and recover from flood waters.

The MCRR will form a community-based, multidisciplinary team and engage a consultant to conduct a Rivers’ Edge Master Plan. The plan will consider creative and science-based opportunities such as

  • increasing green resilient infrastructure

  • dam removal

  • public access to & connection with rivers

  • flood-resilient development in floodplain

  • bridge improvements

This creative and comprehensive overlay to existing and in-process technical studies of Montpelier’s rivers will culminate in a master plan focused on the rivers and our relationship with them.

Additional details:

Montpelier has undertaken numerous planning exercises in the past; the Vermont Emergency Management Scoping Study, Vermont Buildings and General Services recovery plan, and other regional efforts will provide further technical data to support this river-centered planning effort.  This Rivers’ Edge Master Plan will integrate current and past planning efforts to facilitate a comprehensive view and enable Montpelier to move plan-supported projects forward.

MCRR expects to engage river engineers and experts, the City Planning and Parks Departments, Vermont Buildings and General Services, the school district, river adjacent residents, downtown and river adjacent businesses, landscape architects, and members of the public,  to facilitate this work.

We look forward to engaging with the Montpelier community to hear what this study should consider and how to best harness the experience and expertise of the community.
